TTA/TTM and the Solar Union

Postby MittenNinja » Tue Sep 18, 2012 2:12 pm

Couple of questions regarding the Terran Transit Authority and the Union

  • Are the TTA and TTM seperate organizations? Or do they answer to the same authority?
  • Does the Union have any direct control of the TTA?
  • Does the TTA have any authority over the UMFL?
  • What kind of government is the Solar Union? Federation? Republic? Democracy? Who is the President?
  • Conversely, who is in charge of the TTA (if they are a separate entity)?

Im working on writing some fiction and these will heavily influence how the story develops. Thanks!

The TTMs answer to the TTA and the local transit corporation. Yes, "and". In theory, those interests always line up. When they don't, the TTA has the right to call in Special Prosecutors.

  • Does the Union have any direct control of the TTA?

  • Yes, the TTA is a body controlled by the SU parliament, though there's some discussion about which is the dog and which is the tail.

  • Does the TTA have any authority over the UMFL?

  • No, the UMFL is controlled by the Committee for Military Affairs, traditionally led by the Prime Minister.

  • What kind of government is the Solar Union? Federation? Republic? Democracy? Who is the President?

  • It's a representative parliamentary republic. Probably the only one existing in SC 0245.

Sulia Dulisle is the Prime Minister. She's a hard-faced career politician, born in the port of Nanking to a family that owned a chain of grocery stores. She's been PM for 12 years, presiding over an exponential increase in wealth from the influx of materials from the colonies.

The President is Danton Wei. He's newly elected into a position that is supposed to check the power of the Prime Minister, but he doesn't realize just how much his own staff owes Dulisle.

  • Conversely, who is in charge of the TTA (if they are a separate entity)?

  • They are a function of the SU parliament, or vice-versa, depending on your degree of cynicism.

Had to Wiki it to be sure I got the reference, but there are not many women who have help the position of Prime Minister of a siginificant country.

Just remember there's a lot of competing and overlapping. Some colonies are well-run and everything works exactly the way it says on the tin, and other colonies... are not, and/or have to make do with whatever they have on hand - which means all these nice clearly-defined roles have a tendency to smear into each other.

Sometimes that means the question of 'who's in charge' has two or three equally correct answers (on Earth, the Solar Union rules supreme - on a near colony, the local TTA rep has significant pull - on a far-off colony, like Quall was before the uprising, the TTA can and does shove their hand up where the sun don't shine and work the Union governor like a puppet). A Legion unit raised on Mars or a wealthy colony is often better supplied and equipped than TEM units based out in the boonies. It's all situational.

The TTA has a board of governors (like a university), and an extensive library of standards-and-practices that are maybe halfway to being a legal code, plus an auditor's department that serves a lot of intelligence-gathering functions on the side. Local transit corporations have a variety of systems - but pretty limited tools for addressing questions not related to quarterly earnings.
I worked on the setting and mecha design, but my opinions are personal. I am not the fun police.
