Have to add a tiny tiny little asterisk, with a disclaimer.

"We are with you" *
* Unless you actually are a part of the Solar Union and its subsidiaries, the Free Colony Federation and their movement, or just not actually with us. In which case we will invade your system, hunt you down, and convert you by the sword. God help you. (And that's our God.) Amen!

You know that trope where a human and their animal friend (usually a dragon) are paired when they're really young so that they grow up together, and that strengthens their unique bond or whatever? I imagine that when a human child hosts an Ijadi child, it's something like that. Not because they're easier to control, but because it lets them grow up together.

Also, calling the human the 'host' fits the situation perfectly. :D Which is great, because that's often the word for someone who's unwillingly infested, but with the Ijad it's more like the other meaning.

Along these lines is it okay to call an Ijad a symbiote as in a creature that enters into a symbiotic relationship with another species?

Deffo. They are conferring skills and knowledge to their hosts, and the hosts are giving them protection and travel in return.

Technically an Ijad would be a symbiont, the combined Ijad/host pairing would be the symbiote. Symbiote refers to the joined organisms, while each individual involved is a symbiont.

While I'm in a scientific frame of mind, symbiosis (as opposed to parasitism) implies that both organisms involved in the pairing gain some material advantage from the situation. It's clear what advantages the Ijad gain - access to the host's senses, enhanced defensive capabilities, increased mobility etc. However what do the Ijad bring to the party exactly? What benefit does the host gain from being bonded?

Ijad basically are information storage and external muscle memory. An Ijad could, for example, allow a baker to perform open heart surgery, if the symbiont had that knowledge acquired. Also, he has a second opinion and insight. Two thoughts/points of view on a matter.

The surgery could be a bad idea. I can clearly explain to people how to juggle, show them examples and even literally stand behind them and move their hands about while I hold their wrists. I have yet to have any real success with it. Same thing with showing people how to do handstands and headstands, even as soon as I let go they tend to fall over. That being said going through those steps does steepen the learning curve dramatically.

I guess it it would depend on how exactly the takeover (sorry, joining) works. Trill in Star Trek give a LOT of muscle memory, but it all depends on the host's physical capabilities...

The symbionte doesn't teach you in the classical way. It basically reverts your memory patterns into it's own storage, so you know how to perform surgery. Think of it like a module or program. YOur computer doesn't know how to do CAD stock, but if you install a CAD program, it does. It works pretty much the same way, but "portable", as in, the Ijad is the storage device, and your HDD doesn't take the program. You run it from USB. ;)
