My pics are too big to post Help please

Postby ReverbRiver » Thu Jan 16, 2014 2:19 pm

Ive tryed posting my pics to the forge and it tells me that they excide the 250? KiB limit. I was woundering if there is a way for me to lower my pics from around 4MBs to the excepted limit. If push comes to shove I can just post links to my Flicker account if there is no other way around the size restrictions. Any hepl or advice would be greatly apreciated thanks.

You can use the share function on Flickr. It'll give you the BB code to plug into a post here. That's what most people do.

Are you using the "more ways to share" button in Flickr (small box with curved arrow coming out of it below the image)? This button opens a dialog box where you can grab the link (w/ or w/out coding) and has links to many social media apps, but most importantly it has a drop down list where you can select the image size. I usually select "Medium 500".

If you crop the picture it'll help reduce the file size. You can then compress the file which will do the same but reduce resolution a bit.

Resize their pixel count.

4Mb? Are they BMPs? Save as PNG or JPG, that'll compress it down a lot. 4Mb is HUGE for a picture. Also resize down to about 1920x1080 or somewhere in that ratio. No need for 30,000px wide images here :)

4MB sounds right for an uncompressed jpg from a modern digital point/shoot.

My DSLR shoots 19MB images. ;)

Resize to 800 pixel wide for web. Most hosts auto size to that anyway.

or host on flickr at full-res, so you can share at low res but we can click through for a close-up of your build.

Yeah true, uncompressed JPG is just as bad as BMP. And yeah, they are up in the 30,000px range or so. No need for that on the internet. We don't need to have a Travis brick the size of our screen. Resize down, save as regular JPG or PNG and you'll be fine.

my DSLR is 22MPxl and is only 6,500 px on the long side.
30,000pxl on the long side of an image would mean about 690 megapixels.

not to threadjack... ;)

Pedant :P Still, that's over 3x 1080p resolution. And you mentioned, uncompressed.

Not to be pedantic, but let's say the average point/shoot digicam is 12 megapixels, for 4000x3000 images... 3000/1080 ~= 3, but that's only one dimension; you have to account for the other. It'll be similar (close to 3, maybe 4ish because 1080p is wider than a 4/3 camera format), so it's more like 10x 1080p resolution. :D

HOWEVER, I would contend that I DO want a travis brick to take up my whole screen if i'm trying to figure out how a connection was made.

Goes on to be pedantic ;)

Point of the thread is ACTUALLY, resize it if you want to attach it.

arg. point of the threadjack is that it's better for lots of us if we can get the full size if we need it, so use flickr, because it's better than resizing and attaching.
