Compilation of Frame Instructions 2017 version

Postby VitorFaria » Mon Sep 04, 2017 10:35 pm

We all know and love this compilation.

It sure was one of the things that inspired and helped me, as a beginner, back in the day. It beautifully documents an important age of MF0 builds.

Yet, three years have passed. Mixels happened, Twanks and all of the budget frame wars happened, Artasid and his infinite stuff happened.

I feel it's time to build another compilation, so all of our builds from our current era will be neatly documented for future generations.

  • I will use blueprint to make those.
  • I will include all blueprint and LDD files posted on this thread, but I'll not search the Hangar for files already posted. If you want it in the new compilation, post it here.
  • If you have Stud.io and Ldraw files, please convert them to LDD successfully before posting stuff here. Having to fix broken conversions will be too much for me.
  • You may post files you didn't make yourself, as long as you credit the original builder. If the original builder complains I'll remove it afterwords, but the nature of our community suggests this is unlikely.
  • If possible, post a nice render of the frame, with a transparent or white background, so I can do covers for the individual frames in the future.
  • I'm not monopolizing instruction compilations here, if you feel like you can do it better (or even worse), do it.
  • In fact, my compilation will probably look really rough. It would be nice if someone could polish it a bit afterwards.
  • I'll post weekly versions, beginning on 9/11 (i.e. today next week).

UPDATE: Latest official version!

UPDATE 2:

The main point of the compilation is to create a good place to start for beginners, which I feel it is already. We have plenty of design paradigms represented on several complexity levels, so I guess it's already fair to call it useful.

Having this in mind, I'll slow down the releases and make it more project oriented instead of the "agile" paradigm I started with, that was basically a way of pushing myself to get this thing done, but now is making me favor short term improvement over long term too much.

The releases will now be monthly, every day 15. Which means we have only two releases left, and that the 15/12 release will be the final release, and by final I really mean final, it's called "2017 version" for a reason.

I'll be accepting new files on this thread until December first. Feel free to post more stuff after that, it just won't be part of my compilation, or at least not the current one. Remember that I don't hold any monopoly over this thing and everyone is free to gather the files and make a new compilation in the future. In fact I hope that in the long run other people will rise to carry this torch.

Sounds like a great idea. For the LDD files, are there any preferences as to number of frames per file? A lot of times when I do multiple variations on a design, I'll put them all in one file--but I know that can do odd things with the function that auto-generates instructions

One frame per file would be ideal.

That's a great idea! Luckily I already had these made up for the most part, just did a quick pass to make them legal and 100% complete (I think...). I'll look around next time I'm free and see if I can provide anything more technically useful or interesting that LDD will accept, and if there's anything you'd like let me know and I'll do what I can.

Twank

Twank Mammoth

Mk. 3 Twank

I'd also nominate Skrob's Armiger, or its Redux. All I have, however, is his first refinement model and one of the very last models (which I tampered with to make LDD legal), so if there's a definitive version out there that'd be great. (I'd really like to see his Ecuyer in this, too!)

I would LOVE to see a new Compilation Frame Book! This way other players have a chance to see frames they may have missed before.
If possible, I would like to submit my Lyce frame to this. I have many others I would like to submit, but I think this should be enough.

This is my very first LDD file, so I hope I'm uploading it correctly. If not, please inform me how to correct it. Thank you

So do I need Dropbox for this?
Btw I'm debating whether to put the Taguthi, Bassbox, Bandit, Comet, some, or all of them.

You don't need Dropbox. You may upload wherever you wan't as long as the link is explicitly here.

Post whatever frames you want, no such thing as notability here. This is supposed to grow as a very comprehensive list, or at least as comprehensive as my free time allows.

Here's two, the Bandit and the Bassbox (mkII).
Google Drive links: Bandit Bassbox
I might eventually add the Comet and the Taguthi later, but these two are my definite favorites, so here.
Thanks so much @VitorFaria for this idea and compilation. It's great to see someone with that kind of drive on here.

I know I said that submitting my Lyce was probably enough, but then I thought about it. With your permission VitorFaria, I'd like to add some more of my frames. You may use any, or all, or none if you wish. I'm adding these to give you options and I hope you don't mind.

BloodBrother Quad

Core Hound

Darter Classic

Gunghol

Just as an FYI, I was unable to replicate certain parts in the Digital Designer (either because it didn't have them or I'm too stupid to find them) For example, I could not replicate the Frame Skates for the Gunghol because I could not find the 2x1 plate with underside hole, nor could I find the harpoon spear minifig weapon for the BloodBrother Quad legs (I had to substitute with lightsaber blades.)

Again, feel free to use any or none of these as you choose. I again thank you. I agree that a new Compilation of frames is WAY overdue

Really nice to have the Darter here!

I like to point out that I'm making those out of order.

If the frame you posted ins't on the latest release it doesn't mean it will never be there.

It's times like these I wish I knew how to use LDD... I would love for you to have at least the Imp and Ninja designs.

Just one question, will I be able to see all the instructions on Dropbox?

It took me a while to pick and prepare LDD files for these, so I hope their okay. I included 4 systems on each, though feel free to remove/modify them however you'd like.

Mobile Core System - Mini - A made a new variant that uses different ideas from several that I've posted to flickr in the past.

Yaksha - Should be pretty much identical to the one that I brick-built.

I don't want to over-include myself, but I can think of two more designs I have that might make good submissions. Just let me know if you'd like them. ^^

If you link me to pics, I could try to recreate your frames in LDD for you. It's been a while since I've done that with someone else's build, so it would be a fun challenge. ^^

I can't build LDD files for you, but you are welcome to include any of my designs that you see fit.

It won't be on Dropbox, but probably on Google Drive. :D

I would greatly appreciate it!

For the Ninja, https://flic.kr/p/BoFuAi, https://flic.kr/p/BtF14d, https://flic.kr/p/B4QPzf and https://flic.kr/p/BvYNkz.

The Imp, https://flic.kr/p/Y8VkjN, https://flic.kr/p/BmqXBf, https://flic.kr/p/BtGbao and https://flic.kr/p/BtGadd.

The Imp was made using 20 to 30 pieces depending on the build. If you need any breakdown pics I can post them and link them over the next few days.

*Edit* Since I posted right at the same time

From what I can see it looks perfect Artasid, however my brickview is only loading the front view and I can't see the back.
Anyone know if there is an iOS app to view .lxf files?
