Yeah, front mission has always been a favorite of mine too. I was just really dissapointed with front mission evolved, I died a little inside after playing it.

Bad gameplay? Bad story? Lots of bad things?

The story was pretty meh, and it was an arcade-y third person shooter, whereas most of the other games in the series were Tactical RPGs (barring one side-scroller on the SNES? PS1?). It was fun for what it was, and it validated my belief that all shooters have zombies of some sort.

I take it I should find a translated ROM of Front Mission for the SNES and play it?

...What's the story like?

I have played that one. The story was less of an attraction for me. I was more interested in the Wanzers and RPG elements. If I were going to make a tabletop mech-based RPG, I think that game would be my starting point. It uses a grid and you could use a d% for stuff. It's worth playing.

I may have to try Evolved, too, despite the poor review here. I can appreciate it being a shooter if the mechs are varied and different builds change the way you play.

Wooohoo! Glad I could share the find. Apparently it's a remake of the original Front Mission game, plus an entirely extra campaign mode where you play as the enemy side.

There's always Amazon?

Also, there's a sequel to it too.

Imagine, if you will, that someone took FFTactics and used the setting to turn the game into a poorly done ripoff of devil may cry with bad plot, bad gameplay, and horrendous controls. That's pretty much what they did with evolved except replace DMC with armored core.

Command and Conquer 3 had some really neat mechs, but Battletech mechs were always some of my favorites, Mechwarrior 4, despite how terrible I was at it, was a highlight of my childhood. My favorite?

The Hollander was one of the few mechs I liked after 3025. Great choice IMHO.

As a child of the 80s, I grew up with SO many great Mecha / Robot things to choose from. There will always be a special place in my head for G1 Optimus Prime and Hot Rod. Unicron was a friggin planet, so there's that. The variable fighters from Macross, pretty much all of them. Mazinger Z and Mazinkaiser, of course.

But hands down, without a doubt, the one that I've loved since the moment I first saw a peek of it has to be the HWR-00 Monster:

Everybody loves Evil Zeta, it's true.
I worked on the setting and mecha design, but my opinions are personal. I am not the fun police.

I really liked the red ones in Gundam Dynasty Warriors 3... until I used it. :/

So very true! I'm attempting to LDD together a Bawoo for MFZ to no avail.

I've loved robots as far back as I can remember. When I was 4 or 5 I can remember helping my brother work on a robot kit he built from a book he got at Radio Shack. It was called R.O.V.E.R. (Remote Operated Variable Environment Robot) and it used an old ice chest for a body and it could be operated by remote from a Tandy computer. Using punch cards! Am I dating myself here?

I got exposed to vintage sci-fi around that time too, and I can remember being fascinated by guys in clunky suits, like Robby the Robot from Forbidden Planet and Jet Jaguar in Godzilla vs. Megalon, and the Cybermen and Daleks from reruns of Dr. Who on Saturday mornings on public television. I loved Great Mazinger and Gaiking and had them as toys from the Shogun Warriors line.

I first played Battletech when it was called Battledroids, and I loved the original 14 designs, now referred to as the Unseen. I found out those were designs from Japanese anime shows, and that got me exposed to Robotech, both the cartoon and the Revell model kits. The mecha from Macross and Dougram are still among my favorites, and from there Patlabor and Bubblegum Crisis, Appleseed and Ghost in the Shell. I played Armored Core and followed that series through its many iterations and it remains one of my all time favorite console games.

But what's my current favorite Mech/Robot? Was and still is the Tomy Windup Rascal Robot. I got one as a stocking stuffer as a wee child and I played with it for -years-. It survived great amounts of wear-and-tear and the mechanism never seized or failed.
